Some give because they want to, some give because they can. Whether you are fostering or revitalizing relationships with board members, building trust with donors and patrons or working directly with corporate funders or foundations procuring major gifts, your work is important.

Not everyone can make the ask and close the deal, but spearheading coalition building activities or giving your time, donating money or offering your goods, services or expertise is key to the process as well.

>  There’s no secret when it comes to engaging, informing, and educating the public about your cause. Sometimes it's as simple as lending an ear or starting a conversation; give at the level that suits your comfort level.

Causes I champion and raised more than $30 million for through major donor asks and events:

  • Children
  • Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
  • Gifted People and their stuff
  • Animal Welfare
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Art, Visual and Performing

I always encourage people to research the charity or non-profit they want to get involved with or donate money to. You can find 990s on the internet, they are free and open to the public and are a great resource into the inner workings of your favorite charity spending habits and what their assets are. Guidestar and the Foundation Center are the two best places to start.

Please make sure you are aware of your non-profits status. You can write off part or all your donation to a 501(c)(3) but not to a 501(c)(4).

If you are interested in starting a charity organization or a family giving foundation I suggest contacting the Foundation Group. They will save you thousands of dollars versus an attorney trying to push paperwork through the IRS. They have the highest approval rate and are fast and efficient.
